Wood Tour

We offer several different types of wood. Density, hardness, grain pattern and color all play into what makes a custom drumstick because, after all, it is yours.

Janka hardness for a species of wood is defined as the amount of force it takes to embed a 11.28 mm steel ball into the wood to half its diameter. This test is one of the best indicators of a wood's ability to withstand denting and wear. The Janka test is a measure of hardness, not density. Read more about the Janka test at its wikipedia page.

Hickory

Hickory is an industry standard when it comes to making drumsticks. It is strong, shock absorbant and relatively lightweight.
Janka Hardness: 1820 lbs - force
Density: 51 lbs / cu. ft.

Hard Maple

Hard Maple is a little lighter than hickory, allowing for a thicker, lighter stick. Its strength has been proven as it is also widely used for drumsticks.
Janka Hardness: 1450 lbs - force
Density: 45 lbs / cu. ft.

Purpleheart

Purpleheart is a hardwood from Central and South America. It is denser and harder than Hickory. Drumsticks made from purpleheart are therefore more resistant to chipping and breaking and allow for a thinner stick that still has a nice weight to it.
Janka Hardness: 1860 lbs - force
Density: 54 lbs / cu. ft.

Jatoba

Jatoba, or Brazilian Cherry, is slightly denser than hickory and ranks as one of the hardest of hardwoods. It has a beautiful luster than can range in the deep oranges and reds.
Janka Hardness: 2350 lbs - force
Density: 57 lbs / cu. ft.

White Oak

White Oak is comparable to Hard Maple in density and hardness
